1801, Under the London Chandeliers

1801 - The Ball of Rising Shadows

The London court shone with an almost insolent brilliance.

In living rooms with infinite mirrors,
candlesticks shed golden light on precious fabrics,
and laughter mingled with the clink of crystal glasses.

The ball had been organized by Victoria's parents.

Officially, to celebrate the season.
Unofficially, to remind the world that their home still existed.

Victoria descended the central staircase in full view.
Her dress seemed woven of mist.
Her skin, paler than candlelight.
Her eyes, too deep for her age.

There were already whispers.
There was talk of his fragile health.
His isolation.
Of the strange melancholy that surrounded him.

Alaric watched from the sidelines.

Invited out of respect for his line of scholars,
he felt out of place among titles and ambitions.
He preferred libraries to salons,
gilded ruins.

Then she looked up.

And the world stopped rustling.

He doesn't live the rumor, nor the fragility.
He lives a naked truth,
almost painful.

They danced.

The music was slow.
Their hesitant steps.
Their silences more eloquent than the rest of the room's conversations.

When the last note died away,
Victoria withdrew.
Too many glances, too much light, too many whispers.

She stepped through the high glass doors onto the balcony,
seeking the coolness of the London night.

Alaric followed her.

Away from chandeliers and mirrors,
the wind gently lifted the fabrics,
and the tumult of the ball became a distant echo.

This is it,
under the dark sky,
he took out the rose.

It wasn't planned.
He had taken it without knowing why.

He handed it to her.

Victoria took it as an omen.

Their hands brushed against each other.

And in this suspended moment,
something ancient awakened -
an invisible thread linking their destinies to shadows neither of them yet understood.

Under London's chandeliers, love was born... and in the silence of the night, the curse awoke.
