1801 — The Ball of Nascent Shadows

The court of London shone with an almost insolent brilliance.

In the drawing rooms with endless mirrors,
the chandeliers cast a golden light upon precious fabrics,
and laughter mingled with the clinking of crystal glasses.

The ball had been organized by Victoria's parents.

Officially, to celebrate the season.
Unofficially, to remind the world that their house still existed.

Victoria descended the central staircase beneath the watching eyes.
Her dress seemed woven from mist.
Her skin, paler than the candles.
Her eyes, too deep for her age.

Whispers were already circulating.
People spoke of her fragile health.
Of her isolation.
Of that strange melancholy that surrounded her.

Alaric watched the scene from a distance.

Invited out of respect for his lineage of scholars,
he felt out of place among the titles and ambitions.
He preferred libraries to drawing rooms,
ruins to gilding.

Then she raised her eyes.

And the world fell silent.

He saw neither the rumor nor the fragility.
He saw a bare truth,
almost painful.

They danced.

The music was slow.
Their steps hesitant.
Their silences more eloquent than the conversations in the rest of the room.

When the last note faded away,
Victoria withdrew.
Too many eyes, too much light, too many whispers.

She crossed the tall glass doors and stepped onto the balcony,
seeking the coolness of the London night.

Alaric followed her.

Away from the chandeliers and mirrors,
the wind gently lifted the fabrics,
and the tumult of the ball became a distant echo.

It was there,
under the dark sky,
that he brought out the rose.

It had not been planned.
He had brought it without knowing why.

He offered it to her.

Victoria took it as one accepts an omen.

Their hands brushed.

And in that suspended moment,
something ancient stirred —
an invisible thread linking their destinies to shadows that neither of them yet understood.

Beneath the chandeliers of London, love was born… and in the silence of the night, the curse awakened.
